A college dorm room is a great place to throw a party that’s fun and cheap. You can create the perfect atmosphere for your dorm party with the help of a few tips. Some of these tips can be applied to any type of party, but others are specific to the unique situation of having a party in your dorm room.

Invite Friends

A good way to make sure people come to your party is by inviting them. It may seem obvious, but if you want people at your dorm party, you’re going to have to tell them about it.

Set Up Your Room

You’ll need space in your room for people to dance or just hang out. If you can move the furniture out of the way and have enough space in your room, then go ahead and do it. If not, rearrange the furniture so that there’s plenty of room for dancing or whatever else people are going to be doing at your party.

If people will be sitting on couches and chairs, try pushing those pieces of furniture against walls so they don’t take up as much space. Make sure you have enough places for everyone to sit before your guests arrive.

Turn Down the Lights

Lowering the lights in your room creates a cool atmosphere for your dorm party

The first few weeks of college are filled with parties. The initial excitement of reuniting with friends and being in a new environment brings out the best in people. But what happens when that initial excitement wears off?

With no structure in place, college students can easily fall into bad habits during their freshman year.

Here we explore three common pitfalls and offer ways for students to stay on track and make the most out of their freshman year.

I got to play with a few different pieces of gear this weekend, and had an opportunity to compare them head-to-head.

Prototype of the new Panasonic GH2

The first was a prototype of the new Panasonic GH2. This is the camera that I’ve been waiting for, for a long time, and so far I’m very impressed. The image quality and features are about what you’d expect from the GH1 with a firmware upgrade — it’s not up to the level of a 5D Mark II, but it’s more than good enough for most uses. The big news is that autofocus is dramatically improved. I must have shot over 1000 frames yesterday on the same batteries and never saw this camera struggle or fail to focus on anything that the 5D could lock on to.

The second camera was a Panasonic AF100. This is something completely different — an interchangeable-lens camcorder that uses Micro Four Thirds lenses. It’s physically much smaller than the GH2 pictured above, but has a somewhat larger sensor (the same as Four Thirds cameras like the E-P2). The user interface is identical to Panasonic’s excellent prosumer camcorders like the HMC150; it even has audio meters and XLR inputs! Picture quality was also excellent.
